Spock / Uhura One-Shot
Avoiding Favouritism
[info]cheerleaderful

OK so this is a short rambling but if I didn't get it down I wouldn't ever get to sleep.  There are a few beautiful moments of S/U but this one really touched me. Plus I have The Killers on my ipod and the lines really spoke to me.

Forgive me if the order isn't exact, or if I've misquoted Spock - was trying to remember the exact lines, but was too busy crying when I was watching it.  I wanted to just get the essence of the feelings so obviously bubbling under the surface.

SPOILERS!!!!  DON'T READ THIS UNLESS YOU'VE SEEN THE FILM.  Please.  Even the title's a spolier so everything's going under the cut, even the description / disclaimer stuff.  It's U, though, I will say that.

First S/U fic, so pls be nice - but of course constructive criticism is welcome also.  Logical, if I'm ever to improve!  LL&P.  :)  C. x

ETA:  OK, I've seen it again and realised I misquoted both of them, lol!  V soz.  Have fixed.  :)

Title: Tell Me What You Need.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Star Trek, I just like playing on the Enterprise.  Don’t own The Killers either!
Fandom: Star Trek
Pairing: Spock/Uhura
Rating: U
Spoilers: The new film.  DO NOT READ THIS UNLESS YOU’VE SEEN IT!
Summary: Short one-shot.  The moment just outside the bridge after the unthinkable happens…  Uhura’s POV.

Tell Me What You Need

“Will your system be alright, when you dream of home tonight?  There is no message we’re receiving, let me know, is your heart still beating?”  Human, The Killers.

She was still reeling, could hardly speak.  The whole bridge, frozen in shock and horror as the entire planet of Vulcan was sucked into itself, into the black hole planted in its core.  His home, his world, his mother.  His mother.

But then, like a machine, time started again - orders barked, chaos, confusion.  Her eyes went to him.  Stoic, calm.  Cold.  No.  She knew better.

As Spock walked to the doors of the bridge, she followed him.  She needed to hold him, be with him, show him her heart was breaking for his loss.  Let him know that he could share what he felt, if only to her – off all people, to her.  She just could not bear to see his reaction – yes, expected, from the Vulcan she understood – but feared from the man she loved.  How could his heart still be beating?

“I’m so sorry.”

The words seemed futile, foolish.  She was so worried, her heart heavy with the sadness she was unsure of expressing in case it made Spock’s burden even worse.  Again, she knew better.  No passionate outpouring of emotion was necessary.  She merely held him – that was enough.  Enough to give her beloved strength, comfort, love.  She could give no more.

She kissed him tenderly, held his face, raining kisses on his lips, his cheek.  She caressed his head, his neck, pulling him to her, to feel that she was there for him.  What else could she do?  She had to see if there was anything she could provide for him – right now, she would give him anything, give him the world – her heart caught in her throat as she thought it – something he no longer had.  Her eyes glistened as she sought an answer from his, but none was to be found in their sad, empty brown depths.

“What do you need, tell me? Tell me.” she pleaded with him.

“I need everyone to continue performing admirably,” came the efficient reply from her superior officer.

His eyes, though, belied gratitude, albeit fleetingly.  Gratitude… and love.

It was enough.

“OK,” she whispered, barely audibly, with a smile.  Smile for him, Lieutenant, she thought to herself.  Smile for your Acting Captain and be brave for him.  There would be time for more, but later.  In this moment…

It’s what he needs.

My first S/U review, YAY! Thanks so much for taking the time to read my drivel. Bless you for the the comment -'Awww' is EXACTLY what I was going for, lol!! :) :)

I could totally see this being her thoughts during the scene. I mean, she was so heartbreakingly concerned for him. You really captured that. And I loved how she understood that he accepted her comfort the best he could at the moment.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I've enjoyed your fics so much, I appreciate your input. :) I'm also delighted that his ability - or otherwise - to accept her comfort came through, that was a key idea. Cheers! :)

You're welcome :) I'm glad you've enjoyed my stuff. I hope to see more writing from you in the future!

Loved it! Beautifully written! You perfectly described the moment! I particularly love the ending <3 Great!

I'm so glad I wasn't the only one just torn apart by that scene. Brilliantly done. It captured exactly what I thought was going through her head and heart at that moment. Brava darling.

Thank you so much! I'm so pleased you think it's accurate, I was worried about that. Bless ya! *hugz*

Unfortunately I have to go to Kentucky this weekend. :p
I WANT TO SEE IT AGAIN SOOOO BAAAAD!!!

I love that scene! It was so much more than I expected it to be. Your words embellish it perfectly!

Yes, me too. Not only was I not disappointed, but they outdid my expectations so completely. In every way. Squee. Thank you so much for your kind comment, it's really encouraging, particularly as this was my first S/U thing. :) :)

that was really sweet :) You made it match the scene perfectly, which I loved. It was some good insight into Uhura's head. Well done!
